12 Decorating Ideas For Your First Apartment

So this isn't like my usual fashion posts, and I don't know what you'll all think of it, (please be kind) but I want my blog to be more diverse! So have a read, and let me know your honest thoughts below!
....

Leaving the comforts of your parents home can be a daunting, overwhelming and thrilling! The idea of furnishing & decorating your own space can be all of those things and more! But, you must keep in mind that creating a stylish  and homely space is not something that will just come together over night. You should look at your home as an ever evolving collection! Something that will take time and patients and be added to constantly over a  long period of time to make your space the place you call home.

To make the process a little easier, we have narrowed down your shopping list to the top twenty one items/ideas  for creating that perfect first home.

1. MULTI-PURPOSE FURNITURE

It’s true, no matter how big your house is, you always need more storage! Finding furniture that serves two purposes from the flip of a lid is invaluable and you can find some really unique pieces.

2. MIRRORS

It’s a well known fact that mirrors make any room seem bigger, reflecting light and giving the elusion of a bigger space. Why not open your mind to mirrored or acrylic/see through furniture.

3. CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLOUR

Whether or not you like a more modern, clinical look, white is by far the most obvious choice for giving the illusion of a greater space. Just because your walls are plain, that doesn’t mean you can’t dress your apartment with all colours, patterns and textures!

4. FLOATING SHELVES

Storage in your first apartment will be the biggest requirement, but why hide everything in draws and cupboards? Shelving is a great way to display all your personal belongings and you can put them in all the inane  spaces that you could not otherwise use. If you have any space above a door, why not add a shelf, it’s a clever way to make a feature and use space you otherwise wouldn’t.

5.CREATE A WORK SPACE

Desk spaces are often not considered as a priority when moving into your first home. But speaking from experience, it was something I was desperate for, as using your dining table is just not practical and quite chaotic.  Your office space must promote peace and clarity!

6. OVERSIZED CURTAINS

By hanging long curtains, higher than the top of the window, it will create the illusion of a higher ceiling. It might take a bigger ladder but it will most definitely be worth it! Curtains are also a great way of dividing space, especially if you live in a studio apartment.

7. CLOTHING RAIL

Wardrobes can be really big and take up a lot of your bedroom, consider a clothing rail. You can make your clothes a work of art. Ceiling rails are a great way of space saving and use small hooks to hang shoes.

8. FRAMES

Framing keys and flowers is a great touch to any home. You can frame personal belongings or random objects and it can create small interesting pockets within your house.  Why not consider framing light switches for a quirkier touch? And there’s nothing worse than tangled necklaces, just frame them!

9.SIMPLISTIC BATHROOM

Bathrooms are easy to clutter, especially if they are small! Keeping the colours and tones similar is a great way to fool the eye. If you have angled walls, paint the ceiling the same colour as the walls and it will visually expand the space and the unusual shapes will disappear.  Oh and don’t forget, go big on mirrors!

10. DINNER SET

When you leave home, you have the freedom to choose when you have your friends come visit, and something really fun like a dinner party is a great way to have a house warming and show off your new space! Pretty matching dinner sets can make a really great impression and show off your individual style!

11. CANDLES

It’s always a must to create a homely, peaceful atmosphere, and an easy tip is to fill your home with candles. You can buy scented candles, which can look and smell wonderful and if you have some old bottles or teacups, it can create a beautiful focal point on the table.

12. PILLOWS

Comfort is priority in your new home, and no sofa is complete without an array of fabulous pillows. Why not try something new with personalised pillows, or not your average square shape?
